Imperial
Peacock
The Imperial Hotel, constructed 1916 - 1922, in Tokyo, Japan,
was one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s largest and most extravagant projects.
A long time admirer of Japanese art and architecture, Wright personally designed
nearly every detail of the opulent hotel including rugs, furniture, lighting
and Peacock wall murals. (more)

(continued) The
motif of the peacock appeared throughout the hotel, including “Peacock
Alley”, the lavish main lobby where affluent guests would swagger and
sashay. In 1923, the Imperial Hotel survived Japan’s worst recorded
earthquake, while many surrounding buildings were destroyed. This added to
the hotel’s fame and greatly enhanced Wright’s reputation as an
architect. Although the Imperial Hotel was the premier luxury hotel in Tokyo
for decades, it was finally demolished in 1968. The front facade of the hotel
was preserved and reconstructed at the Meiji Mura Museum, an architectural
park near Nagoya, Japan.
