In a response to a critique of the Guggenheim, Frank Lloyd Wright said that
it was his intention "to make the building and the painting an uninterrupted,
beautiful symphony such as never existed in the World of Art before."(more)

To help achieve this, he chose a site near the peace and tranquility of Central Park, and after many trials he chose an organic form that admits diffused natural light from above and at every level. He said further that the building "is one great space on a single continuous floor. The eye encounters no abrupt change but is gently led... as if at the edge of the shore watching an unbreaking wave."
