W17 City by the Sea
Frank Lloyd Wright designed Midway Gardens during 1913-14 as a cultural center for arts and entertainment in Chicago.  The building was a fine example of Wright’s pioneering the use of reinforced concrete as an artistic medium. (more)

(continued) Wright pursued his concept of architectural unity by designing components such as furnishings, place settings, sculpture, and wall murals for this elaborately decorated edifice. In the mural “City By The Sea”, Wright created the feeling of the Chicago skyline with balloons, confetti, and vibrant colors.  Midway Gardens was demolished, with great difficulty, in 1929.  In 1957, the mural design was revived for the Music Pavilion at Taliesen West in Scottsdale, Arizona
